Dear Ms. Whalen:

I have carefully considered your request to drop courses past the academic deadline from 2014 - 2017. Based on the circumstances you refer to in your letter of appeal, I have decided the following:

1. I will grant your request to drop FILM 300 (S 2016), LLCU 319, LIBS 100, HIST 463 (F 2016), HIST 449, HIST 400 and HIST 461 (W 2017) past the academic deadline. The documentation submitted with this appeal indicates that you were seen for mental health issues from spring of 2016; therefore, I will allow these late course drops from this time period.

2. I must unfortunately deny your request to drop HIST 241 (W 2014), HIST 241 and FREN 250 (F 2015), HIST 393 (W 2016) and HIST 459 (F/W 2015-16). Your documentation supplied confirms the timeline and severity of your illness from Spring of 2016 to Winter of 2017 but not for the period of Winter 2014 €“ Winter 2016 when you took those courses. Furthermore, you previously appealed to drop HIST 241 (W 2014) and that appeal was denied. As per Academic Regulation 3.1.2.5, once an appeal decision has been made, the matter cannot be re-appealed. You had the opportunity to appeal that decision to the Board of Studies within 21 days of receiving your decision letter.

Students with chronic health issues are expected to monitor their health and determine by Week 8 of each term whether or not to drop any courses and take appropriate action. For the future, I would strongly recommend that you consider reducing your course load, seek academic advice before the end of Week 8 each term to review your progress in each class and determine whether or not your mental health issues are affecting your academic performance and if so, drop courses as needed.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent. Guidelines for appealing to the Board of Studies and the appeal form can be found at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€) Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact Mr. Harry Smith, Office of the Ombudsman for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative. His office is located in room 421 Robert Sutherland Hall and he can be reached by phone (533-6495) or e-mail (ombuds@queensu.ca).

Sincerely,

Johanne Bénard, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
