Dear Ms. Abrahim:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in HLTH 230, BIOL 243, BIOL 201 (F 2017) and BIOL 202 (W 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower€. Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your file shows that your personal challenges began before your first year of studies and they have been chronic and ongoing in nature since that time. It also appears that you have sought counselling from academic advisors on many occasions over the course of your time at Queen€™s but unfortunately you have not chosen to follow the advice given to better manage your academics, such as reducing your course load and/or dropping classes by the Week 8 deadlines. The appeal system is not designed to compensate for these types of ongoing circumstances and there is no evidence supplied to show that you would have performed significantly better in these classes under different circumstances. I would strongly recommend that you monitor the drop deadlines very carefully and if you are continuing to experience problems that affect your coursework, you must drop classes as needed within these deadlines.
I would also recommend that you consider spending the time over the next year to prioritize your health. After this time away, you may be in a better position to fully dedicate your time and energy to your studies. You should also register with Accessibility Services to ensure that you receive any academic accommodations you need moving forward.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
