Dear Mr. Willet:

I have carefully considered your appeal to drop SOCY 225, SOCY 227, SOCY 235 and PHIL 204 (W 2018) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in SOCY 275 (F 2017). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:

1. I will grant your request to drop SOCY 225, SOCY 227, SOCY 235 and PHIL 204 late. The documentation supplied covers this timeline and confirms the severity of your health issues and the impact they on these classes.

2. I must deny your request to receive Credit standing in SOCY 275. There is no documentation supplied to cover the 2017 fall term when this course was taken.

I would strongly encourage you to seek some advising from the Sociology department to receive some help with an academic plan for completing the courses required for your Sociology degree plan. They can explain what specific grades are needed to access the further SOCY courses you require to graduate, what you may need to repeat and how to map out those courses over future years. I would also strongly recommend that moving forward you monitor the drop deadlines very carefully and if you are continuing to experience problems that affect your coursework, you must drop classes as needed within these deadlines. If you need advice or guidance with these decisions, you should see an academic advisor in the Faculty Office and they will be happy to assist you. Appointments can be made by calling 613-533-2470 or dropping by, Main Floor Dunning Hall.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent. Guidelines for appealing to the Board of Studies and the appeal form can be found at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€) Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact Mr. Harry Smith, Office of the Ombudsman for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative. His office is located in room 421 Robert Sutherland Hall and he can be reached by phone (533-6495) or e-mail (ombuds@queensu.ca).

Sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
