I have carefully considered your appeal to Waive the Requirement to Withdraw for One year and drop SPAN 111 (F 2016), ASTR 101, BISC 101, GPHY 102 (W 2017), LLCU 111 (F 2017), DEVS 100, POLS 110 (FW 2017-18) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.
Based on the information and documentation presented in your appeal, I am also willing to grant you Credit Standing in BISC 100 (F 2016) and RELS 131 (FW 2017-18). Credit standing is an option if a student has completed all the components of a course but due to their extenuating circumstances earned a substantially lower grade in a course. A grade of CR will replace the low grade on your transcript and does not impact your GPA. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript with a notation of CR as your grade in these two courses. Please note that the Requirement to Withdraw for One Year ruling will be removed from your transcript due to the late drops of your failed courses.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances and the many challenges you faced during your first and second year of university. But I need to warn you that the appeal process is not meant to be used to manage ongoing problems. The Appeal process is designed for students who encounter problems, or whose problems become acute, after the drop deadline. Instead, upon your return to Queen€™s, I would encourage you to work with your Counsellor and an Academic Advisor to manage your academics. This could include taking a lighter course load and would include evaluating the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term.
I commend you on your decision to take a year off from your studies to spend a year at an orphanage in Sri Lanka as a volunteer. I am sure that experience will be life altering and help enhance your future course work in Global Development Studies.
