Dear Ms. Pender:
I have carefully considered your appeal to have your grade on your video listicle assignment (F 2014) in FILM 240 reevaluated without penalty. After reviewing your appeal and all the information presented and consulting with Dr. Matrix, I have decided to uphold Dr. Matrix€™s decision. Your final grade in the video listicle assignment will remain unchanged.
I have investigated this matter and asked Dr. Matrix to respond to the question of students not being able to successfully submit this assignment as per the instructions provided in the course syllabus and the associated penalty assigned. Dr. Matrix explained that FILM 240 is a technical course and learning how to embed HMTL code and iFrame code is actually one of the learning outcomes associated with it so testing a student€™s ability to perform these tasks is considered to be an important assessment of the student€™s mastery of the course material. Dr. Matrix also confirmed that she stated this information in the course outline and advised students not to wait until too close to the deadline to learn this skill but to leave extra time for practice and take advantage of the technical support that was available from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day to ensure they were able to successfully submit their assignment by the deadline. The course outline also clearly indicates the policy on what constitutes acceptable submission of the assignment (which is successfully publishing your assignment on Moodle). While you may have had the content of the assignment completed, because the successful submission of the assignment (publishing) was a specific part of the evaluation, I cannot waive this requirement. Finally, I would like to note that Dr. Matrix did award you partial marks for this assignment (7/15) to represent partial credit for the other elements that you were able to submit on time. While this still represents a failure of the assignment itself, those 7 marks do still count toward your total points that go toward your final grade.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
