Associate Dean: Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Student Name: Kiana Catarino
Student Email: 16kjc2@queensu.ca

Course: CHEM 281
Term: Fall
Year: 2018
Category: Drop a course after the academic deadline

Dear Ms. Catarino:

I was sorry to read of the difficulties you have experienced Kiana. No doubt recovering from such an event has been a challenge and after carefully considering your appeal to drop CHEM 281 (F 2018) past the academic deadline, I have decided to grant your request.

I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances but need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage an ongoing condition. The way to manage such a condition is to pause at week 7 or 8 and evaluate your progress. If you are not keeping up with readings, assignments and tests due to circumstances beyond your control, the appropriate remedy is to drop the courses(s) by week 8. Appeals for Credit and late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter problems after week 8 or whose problems become more acute.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Yours sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
