Dear Mr. Park:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop LATN 110 (FW 2018-19) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I realize that this is a disappointing decision, however the circumstances you have outlined do not warrant the granting of this appeal. You acknowledge in your letter that you did not drop the course by the drop date even though you were finding it difficult. Unfortunately, not fully assessing your progress in a course until after the drop date is not considered grounds for an appeal. I do realize that you are also making preparations for your citizenship test but you were notified of your test date on February 8th, which was well before the drop deadline date of March 1st. If you felt that the preparations for that citizenship test would jeopardize your studies, you had ample time to drop LATN 110.
You may want to consider retaking this course Jisung since the policy regarding repeats is such that the low grade would be excluded from your GPA and the higher grade would be included in your GPA. In the future, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress by week 7 of the term and drop courses that you have fallen behind in or do not have a firm grasp of the materials by the week 8 drop date.
