Dear Yizhou Zhao:
I read with interest your letter of appeal where you are requesting to drop ECON 351 (W 2019) and explained that you took that course without knowledge that STAT 361 will be offered during the Fall term 2019. You further explain that STAT 361 would serve as the prerequisite for your Winter term 2020 courses and be a repeat of your first attempt in STAT 361. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal reports that you wish to drop this course since you realized you do not need it at this point since you can repeat STAT 361 during the Fall term 2019. This is not considered an extenuating circumstance and I cannot in good conscience grant this appeal. Appeals for late drops are normally granted for students who experienced a documented extenuating circumstance after the drop date and although you found out that STAT 361 will be offered during the Fall term on March 14th, this is not deemed an extenuating circumstance.
