Dear Dainelle Barham:
I have read with interest the circumstances you have outlined in your letter of appeal to drop ENIN 140 (W 2019) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal outlines that a close family friend passed away in late January and I am sure that was a difficult period but that circumstance took place well before the March 1st drop date. You further explain in your letter of appeal that you submitted an assignment late due to a technical problem. Unfortunately, that is not considered an extenuating circumstance.
This may be a disappointing decision Dainelle, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
