Dear Jasmine Modupe:

I read with interest the challenges you experienced during the 2017/2018 academic year and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop GNDS 321, PHIL 303, PHIL 329, PHIL 352 (W 2018), PHIL 257 (FW 2017/18) and PHIL 303, PHIL 335, PHIL 347 (F 2018) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided the following:

1. I will grant your request to drop GNDS 321, PHIL 303, PHIL 329, PHIL 352 (W 2018) and PHIL 257 (FW 2017/18). Certainly the health related challenges you experienced during Winter term 2018, as well as your documentation, support the late drop of courses from this time period.

2. I will deny your request to drop PHIL 303, PHIL 335 and PHIL 347 (F 2018) past the academic deadline. You had received notice from the Canada Immigration informing you that your temporary residency status was expiring on October 19, 2018 which was well before the November 1st drop deadline. Since you were advised that your application for a study permit was refused, it was your responsibility to drop your Fall term courses and I cannot therefore justify altering your transcript after the fact.

Jasmine, you may be aware of the progression rules regarding Academic Probation but let me remind you that if your GPA does not reach 1.6 when we review your transcript in May 2019, you will be placed on Academic Probation and will need to raise your GPA to 1.6 by May 2020 or you will be required to withdraw for one year. For your information, a good strategy to help you meet that target GPA is to repeat courses which you failed or earned a low grade in. If a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA. This is considered a wise strategy to ensure you are able to raise your GPA to 1.6 at the next point of progression evaluation.
