Dear Yooyeon Chai:
I was sorry to read of the passing of your father in April 2018. No doubt his illness and subsequent death impacted your studies during the 2017/2018 academic year. I have carefully considered your appeal to drop LING 100, PSYC 100 (FW 2017/18), GEOL 106, MUSC 104 (W 2018) and CLST 102, GEOL 106, MUSC 104 (F 2018) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I will grant your request to drop LING 100, PSYC 100 (FW 2017/18) and GEOL 106, MUSC 104 (W 2018) based on the illness and death of your father during that time period.
2. I will deny your request to drop CLST 103, GEOL 106 and MUSC 104 (F 2018) past the academic deadline. There was ample time between your father€™s passing and the November 2, 2018 drop date to evaluate the impact your grief may be having on your courses and you could have dropped courses by the drop date deadline if you had fallen behind or were struggling in your course work due to that circumstance.
Going forward, I would strongly urge you to pause and evaluate your progress in your courses by week 7 of the term and if you have fallen behind in courses, or if life circumstances are impeding your success, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop date deadline.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€). Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact the Office of the Ombudsman (www.queensu.ca/ombudsman) for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative.
Sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
