Dear Alexandria Demetriou:

I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in PSYC 100, ENGL 100, SOCY 122, PHIL 115 (FW 2016/17); SOCY 210, SOCY 226, SOCY 275 (F 2017) and ITLN 111, SPAN 111 (F 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:

1. To grant your request for Credit in PSYC 100, ENGL 100, SOCY 122 and PHIL 115 (FW 2016/17) based on the extenuating circumstances outlined in your letter of appeal and supported by the documentation you have submitted. Your grades in these courses will appear as a CR on your transcript.

2. To deny your request to receive Credit in SOCY 210, SOCY 226, SOCY 275 (F 2017). Your letter and documentation indicate that there was a death in your family on December 13th, 2017 but have received information from the Exams Office and your instructors advising us that the exams/end of term quiz were administrated in these courses prior to the death of your family member.

3. To deny your request to receive Credit in ITLN 111, SPAN 111 (F 2018). The circumstances presented do not outline why you were unable to drop these courses by the drop dates and the documentation you submitted dated March 12, 2019 indicates that you were seen once during the Fall term 2018 by a counsellor. Your documentation notes that your anxiety was causing moderate impairment to your ability to perform your academic requirements which does not warrant altering grades after the fact.

The appeal process is not meant to manage chronic and ongoing circumstances. Instead, students should pause and evaluate the impact of their circumstances on their studies and if life challenges has caused them to fall behind in course requirements or impaired their focus in courses, they should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline dates. In the future, you may want to consider carrying a lighter course load if family related circumstances continue to affect your course work.
