Dear Victoria Pitoscia:
I read with interest the challenges you outline in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your request to drop CISC 110 (F 2017) and CLST 203 (W 2019) past the academic deadline and receive Credit standing in PSYC 100, ARTH 120 (FW 2017/18). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I will grant your request to drop CISC 110 (F 2017) and receive Credit standing in ARTH 120 (FW 2017/18). Certainly the challenges you experienced as well as your documentation, support these requests.
2. I will deny your request to drop CLST 203 (W 2019) past the academic deadline. You have not provided documentation which supports the situation you explain regarding Winter term 2019 nor an explanation as to why your circumstances impacted this particular course more so than your other courses.
3. I will deny your request for Credit standing in PSYC 100 (FW 2017/18). The information we have received from the instructor notes that you failed both the midyear exam and the final exams which are important assessments as to the extent that the learning outcomes have been met. The grade earned is an accurate representation of the work completed in this course.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€ Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
Going forward, I suggest that you inform yourself of the academic regulations concerning deadlines as they are outlined in the Important Dates section on the Arts and Science web page and assess your progress in your courses or discuss your options with an Academic Advisor during week 7 or 8 of the term. If you find that you have fallen behind in your attendance, readings or assignments, it is your responsibility to drop by the end of week 8.
