Dear Iqbal Mohamed:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the challenges you faced during the time period of 2018/19 and have carefully considered your appeal to drop DEVS 100 and ENGL 100 (S 2018); FRST 290, LIBS 100 (F 2018); and GNDS 120, WRIT 120 (W 2019) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal explains that during the Summer and Fall terms 2018 you experienced a significant decline in your health and life situation but you have not submitted documentation which supports those extenuating circumstances. The document we have on file dated July 31, 2018 indicates a period of illness between August 1st €“ August 3rd and you were accommodated in the Summer term courses based on that documentation. In addition, the documentation related to your request to drop GNDS 120 and WRIT 120 late is dated February 15th which was prior to the March 1st drop date. It is a student€™s responsibility to evaluate their progress in their courses by the drop date and since you were diagnosed with an illness which could last as long as 12 weeks, you should have dropped these courses if the impairments were going to make it difficult to be successful in these courses.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Iqbal, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
