Dear Shaneen Khan:
I read with interest the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your appeal to €œWaive the Requirement to Withdraw for One Year€ as well as drop MUSC 171 (F 2018), DEVS 100, POLS 111 and PSYC 100 (FW 2018/19) past the academic deadline, and receive Credit standing in PHIL 111 (FW 2018/19 and HLTH 102 (W 2019). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I will grant your request to drop MUSC 171 (F 2018), DEVS 100, POLS 111 and PSYC 100 (FW 2018/19) past the academic deadline and grant you Credit standing in PHIL 111 (FW 2018/19). You grade in PHIL 111 will appear on your transcript as CR. Certainly the health related challenges you experienced during this past year, as well as your documentation, support these requests.
2. I will deny your request to seeking Credit standing in HLTH 101 (W 2019). The instructor has advised that the learning outcomes have not been met in this course since you were unable to complete the last and main culminating assignment and I cannot therefore justify altering your transcript after the fact for this specific course.
3. Due to the late drops and Credit standings that will now be applied to your transcript, the Requirement to Withdraw will be removed.
As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider:
€¢ Choose courses carefully. Achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA and this is certainly an option for the HLTH 101 course.
€¢ Carry a lighter course load, as you have suggested you would do, so you have quality time to spend on the courses you register in.
€¢ Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right plan for your interests and aptitudes
€¢ Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 613-533-2470) or through your plan department.
€¢ The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
€¢ The Student Wellness Services Centre located in Mitchell Hall offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature. I encourage you to seek support from that office so you can develop strategies to help you deal with your condition.
€¢ I strongly suggest that you register with QSAS who can help support you with both your health and academics.
€¢ If you encounter extenuating circumstances that inhibit your ability to complete course work, consider seeking Academic Consideration. More information is available at: https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/accommodations
Please read carefully the document which will follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.
Going forward, you should be attentive to your progress and assess whether you are actively engaged and attending classes, completing your readings and assignments. If not, you should drop any courses in which you have fallen behind in by the end of week 8 (the drop deadline). Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter extenuating circumstances after week 8.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€). Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact the Office of the Ombudsman (www.queensu.ca/ombudsman) for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative.
Sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
