Dear Alexander Ghai:
I was sorry to read of the difficulties you experienced during Fall term 2018 and for the loss of your friend. No doubt this impacted your studies to some degree. I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in CISC 121 (F 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower€. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling reasons indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
While your letter of appeal reports that your circumstances impacted your final grade, it fails to offer a compelling argument as to why your extenuating circumstances affected this course more so than your other courses. In addition, the information we received from your instructor shows that the grades received throughout the term are not significantly out of line with the grade you received when your friend€™s health was impacting your studies. And finally, the exam was deferred in this course so you have already received an accommodation to assist you during this difficult time.
