I am sorry to have read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop ECON 212 (W2018) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in COMM 200 (W 2018), MATH 121 (FW 2017/18) and ECON 255 (W 2019) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances€. Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€ Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
Although clearly winter term 2018 presented a difficult situation, I am denying your request related to MATH 121, COMM 200 and ECON 212 as those circumstances are not sufficient to alter a transcript. A transcript needs to be an accurate reflection of achievement and the input we received from your instructors suggests that the grades earned are representative of the work submitted.
I am denying your appeal related to winter term 2019 since your injury was during week one of the course followed by four weeks in a sling which was well before the March 1st drop date. If your grades were negatively impacted by your injury, you had sufficient time to drop the course. The information we received from the instructor noted that you were unsuccessful in both the mid-term and final exams and that final exam was well after your injury date.
In your appeal you make reference to your friend€™s successful appeal, but that appeal decision did not alter his transcript and grades were not changed.
I am sure this is a disappointing decision Omar but please take note of our repeat policy which is that if you repeat a course with a low grade, the higher grade will be included in your GPA and the low grade will be excluded from your GPA.
