I have carefully read your appeal and assessed your documentation related to your request to drop CHEM 282 (W 2016), CHEM 281 (F 2016), CHEM 282 (W 2017), PHYS 117 (FW 2017/18) past the academic deadline as well as request Credit standing in CHEM 281 (F 2015) and BCHM 218 (W 2017). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
€¢ I will grant your request seeking Credit standing in CHEM 281 (F 2015) due to the documentation you submitted related to your mother€™s illness which impacted your studies for the period of July to November 2015.
€¢ I will deny your request seeking Credit standing in BCHM 218 (W 2017) and your request for late drops in CHEM 282 (W 2016), CHEM 281 (F 2016), CHEM 282 (W 2017), PHYS 117 (FW 2017/18). The documentation related to your mother€™s illness was, as noted above, for the period of Fall term 2015. The documentation you submitted related to your car accident is from January 2012 and you were not a student at Queen€™s during that period and is not relevant to your appeal. The documentation you submitted from Student Wellness Services is for the period of the Fall/Winter 2018/2019 academic year and you are not appealing for courses during that timeframe.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances€. Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€ Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I am pleased to have noted your academic success during the past year. The support you are receiving from Student Wellness Services appears to be helpful
Please note that good practice for all students is to evaluate the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term and drop courses if necessary. The appeals system is intended for situations where students experience an unforeseen acute or new situation that arises after the drop deadline in Week 8.
I am sure this is a disappointing decision Ahzum but let me remind you of the repeat policy. If a student repeats a course and earns a higher grade, the low grade is excluded from the GPA and the higher grade is included in the GPA.
