Decision Letter
Appeal Number: 5949
Decision Date: July 31, 2019
Associate Dean: Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
Student Name: Reid Humphrey
Student Email: reid.humphrey99@gmail.com
Dear Reid:
As per standard practice, I have reviewed your appeal before it proceeds to the Board of Studies for consideration. Based on the new documentation you supplied with that appeal, I have decided to change my original decision and grant your request to waive the 21 day appeal deadline as well as grant your request to €œWaive the Requirement to Withdraw for One year€.
You may now resume your studies at Queen's University with the conditions noted below.
Due to the ongoing nature of your previous difficulties, I have made the decision to place you on part-time status. Note that as a part-time student you will only be allowed a maximum of 18.0 units in the Fall-Winter session with no more than 9.0 units per term. In order to be eligible to progress from part-time to full-time studies, you must fulfill the following conditions:
1. Complete a minimum of 24.0 Queen's units, excluding repeated courses, from the time at which you were admitted part-time on a degree Program;
2. Achieve a minimum Cumulative GPA of 1.90.
OR
1. Complete a minimum of 18.0 Queen's units, excluding repeated courses, from the time at which you were admitted part-time on a degree Program;
2. Achieve a minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.90; and
It is my hope that the slower pace of part-time study will provide you with the time needed to carry out your proposed plan. Your €strategies for success€™ are excellent and should enable you to be more successful in your future studies.
See Admission Regulation 10 at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-calendar for more on the movement from part-time to full-time study.
In addition to being placed on part-time status, prior to registration in courses you need the Associate Dean€™s permission to register and will need to meet with Ms. Haley Everson, (Associate Director) to discuss your academic plan and discuss strategies to help you achieve a good academic record going forward. Checking in with Haley each term will provide you with support and helpful advice Please contact Haley (eversonh@queensu.ca) directly to arrange either an in person or telephone appointment. There is currently a block on your student account preventing you from registering in courses and Haley will remove that block once you discuss your academic plan for the upcoming year.
As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider (several of which you have already committed to carrying out):
€¢ Choose courses carefully. Achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA. This course of action will help to ensure you will be in good academic standing and not at risk of being required to withdraw for three years.
€¢ Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right courses or plan for your interests and aptitudes
€¢ Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
€¢ Follow through with your plan to register with QSAS to assist you in finding ways to cope with the challenges you have outlined. In addition, the Student Wellness Services Centre located on the first floor of Mitchell Hall, 69 Union Street, offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
€¢ If you encounter extenuating circumstances that inhibit your ability to complete course work, consider seeking Academic Consideration. More information is available at: https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/accommodations
Please also read carefully the document which will follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.
Going forward, you should be attentive to your progress and assess whether you are actively engaged and attending classes, completing your readings and assignments. If not, you should drop any courses in which you have fallen behind in by the end of week 8 (the drop deadline). Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter extenuating circumstances after week 8. Students, such as yourself, who are managing an ongoing illness, are expected to evaluate its impact on their studies and use the drop deadline, not an appeal after the fact, as the remedy.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€). Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact the Office of the Ombudsman (www.queensu.ca/ombudsman) for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative.
If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.
Yours sincerely,
Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
