Dear Andrea Bertucci:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your request to waive the 21 day appeal deadline. Based on the circumstances outlined and the documentation provided, I will grant your appeal to waive the 21 day appeal deadline as well as grant your request to €œWaive the Requirement to Withdraw for One year€. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University. In addition, I will drop ECON 110, ENGL 100, MATH 121, PSYC 100 (FW 2018/19) and PHIL 153, STAT 263 (W 2019) late and these grades will be changed from F to a notation of DR on your transcript. The F grades will no longer impact your grade point average.
This decision was not made lightly Andrea, but I can see that the severity of your circumstances were significant. I am pleased to see that you have sought out help and will receive the support needed to aid you in your studies and health including meeting with your medical specialist and registering with QSAS.
As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider (several of which you have already committed to carrying out):
€¢ Choose courses carefully and follow through with your plan to carry a lighter course load.
€¢ Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right courses for your interests and aptitudes
€¢ Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
€¢ Work with your QSAS Advisor who can assist you in finding ways to cope with the challenges you have outlined.
€¢ Going forward, you should be attentive to your progress and assess whether you are actively engaged and attending classes, completing your readings and assignments. If not, you should drop any courses in which you have fallen behind in by the end of week 8 (the drop deadline). Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter extenuating circumstances after week 8. Students, such as yourself, who are managing ongoing challenges, are expected to evaluate the impact those challenges are having on their studies and use the drop deadline, not an appeal after the fact, as the remedy.
I wish you success in your future studies.
Yours sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
