Dear Dong Woo Sul:
I received your letter of appeal requesting a late drop of MATH 121 (FW 2018/19) and I am sorry to have read of the challenges you outline which you report impacted your performance in this course. After reviewing your appeal letter, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I am sure this is a disappointing decision, but the circumstances outlined in your letter of appeal does not warrant the altering of your transcript. You were granted consideration for both the mid-term and final exam in this course. On December 11, 2018 you were advised in a letter that it was your responsibility to follow up with your instructor(s) as soon as possible either by email or in-person to discuss what academic consideration will be granted. It appears that you did not follow through with that recommendation. If you had, there may have been an alternate and earlier exam date presented to you to complete the missed December exam or at minimal, you would have been aware that writing that deferred exam in September was your only option. Upon knowing that information in a timely fashion, you may have decided to drop the course by the March 1st drop date rather than write the mid-term exam at the end of year/in September.
The drop deadline is set at Week 8 to allow students plenty of time to assess their progress in a class and withdraw without any academic penalty if they feel that they cannot keep up with the demands or have the academic background needed to successfully complete it.
For your information, if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA. This may be a good solution regarding MATH 121.
