Dear Fatmeh Aldmaisy:
I received your letter of appeal requesting a late drop in PHYS 118 (S 2019) and I am sorry to have read of the passing of your grandfather which you report impacted this course. After reviewing your appeal letter, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I am sure this is a disappointing decision, but the timeline of the circumstances outlined in your letter of appeal does not completely correlate with the results of the work you completed in this course. The letter of support which you provided indicates that our grandfather passed away on May 29th. That date was prior to the deadline date to drop this course (June 28, 2019) and if you found that this news was distressing, you should have dropped the course by that deadline date. Additionally, the information we have received from the On-Line Studies office indicates that your grades were consistently poor in this course from the beginning of term and there is not a significant change in your performance after your grandfather passed away.
The drop deadline is established to allow students plenty of time to assess their progress in a class and withdraw without any academic penalty if they feel that they cannot keep up with the demands or have the academic background needed to successfully complete it.
