Dear Abigail Robertson:
I am sorry to have read of the challenges you experienced last year and am sorry for your loss. I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat Standing in PSYC 251 and PSYC 205 (W 2019) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
The documentation you have submitted is relevant to the Fall term 2018 which is when your grandfather passed away. If you were struggling in your Winter term courses, you had plenty of time to assess the impact your circumstances were having on your studies prior to the March 1st drop deadline. In addition, the information we received from your instructors advised that there is a policy within the Psychology Department that a student must pass the final exam in on-line courses to pass the course which demonstrates that the learning outcomes have been met. Unfortunately, AG standing without completing the exam in these courses is not a viable appeal option.
Going forward, I suggest that you carefully evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term and if you are struggling in your courses or if your health is suffering, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.
