Dear Zeyana Laplante:
I am sorry to have read that you experienced difficulties during the 2018/2019 academic year and have carefully considered your appeal to drop GNDS 212 (F 2018) and FREN 118, IDIS 280, HLTH 235 (W 2019) past the academic deadline as well as request Credit standing in HLTH 235 (W 2019) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances., Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€ Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your file shows that a previous appeal was granted due to the extenuating circumstances outlined. At that time, you were asked if you wanted to amend your appeal to include all courses that were impacted by the circumstance but advised our office that you wish to only include the FREN 150 due to OSAP implications. The appeals system is not designed help manage that process. Further, Academic Regulation 3.2.2.5 states that €œstudents are not able to revisit the same time period in submitting subsequent appeals. For example if a student has appealed to drop one or more classes without academic penalty in the Fall term he or she is not able to make a subsequent different appeal in relation to the same time period.€
I am sure this is a disappointing decision Zeyana but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the lower grade will be excluded from their cumulative GPA and the higher grade will be included. This may be a good strategy as you consider future courses registrations.
