Dear Arthur Arnold:
I have carefully considered your appeal to extend the Incomplete grades in POLS 101, ECON 112 (W 2019) and PSYC 100 (FW 2018/19). After reviewing your file I have decided to the following:
1. I am denying your request to extend the Incomplete grades in POLS 101 and PSYC 100. The information we received from your POLS 101 instructor notes that only 35 of the course work has been submitted and extending the timeline to complete the remaining requirements at this stage would make it difficult for you to attain the learning outcomes in this course. This is similar with PSYC 100 since the materials of instruction from last year have now changed and it would be difficult for you to be successful in the outstanding final exam without the course materials to help you prepare. I am however willing to drop these courses late based on your circumstances outlined and the documentation you have provided. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
As you know, Appeal Regulation 3.3.5 notes that Incomplete grades are approved by instructors with outstanding work deadlines extended for a period of one full term after the completion of a class. If this timeline is not met, any further request to submit incomplete work or to write a final examination after that term has elapsed must be made through a formal appeal. A medical certificate or other documentation outlining how the personal extenuating circumstances prevented the student from completing the outstanding work by the end of that next term must be provided. A note from the instructor agreeing to a further extension is also required.
2. I will grant your request to add ECON 112 (W 2019) and extend the Incomplete grade in that course due to the support received from the instructor. You will be required to complete the exam in this course during this current term and it is your responsibility to contact your instructor as soon as possible to make the appropriate arrangements. You must write your exam in ECON 112 prior to the release of the exam to the exam bank and the release of those exams takes place shortly.
In the future, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in a course by week 7 of the term and if you are finding the material too difficult or have not kept up with the course work, you should drop the course by the week 8 drop deadline. The drop deadline is set at Week 8 to allow students plenty of time to assess their progress in a class and withdraw without any academic penalty if they feel that they cannot keep up with the demands or have the academic background needed to successfully complete it.
