Dear Charles Madeira-Shapiro:

I have carefully considered your appeal requesting Credit standing in ASTR 101 (F 2016); late Drops in ENIN 301, CHEM 211, STAT 263 (F 2017), ASTR 101 (S 2018), PHAR 100 (F 2018) and BCHM 270, CLST 103, GPHY 207, PHGY 216 (W 2019) as well as extending Incomplete grades in WRIT 125, FILM 240, ENIN 140, CHEM 222 (W 2018) and ENIN 301, CHEM 212, PHYS P20 (F 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided to the following:

1) To grant your request to drop ASTR 101 (S 2018), PHAR 100 (F 2018) and BCHM 270, CLST 103, GPHY 207, PHGY 216 (W 2019) due to the documentation you have submitted.

2) To deny your request for Credit standing in ASTR 101 (F 2016) since you have already appealed for this time period. Further to that, the current documentation submitted does not cover that time period.

3) To deny your request to drop ENIN 301, CHEM 211 and STAT 263 (F 2017) since your documentation does not support this time period

4) To deny your request to Extend Incomplete grades in WRIT 125, FILM 240, ENIN 140, CHEM 222 (W 2018) and ENIN 301, CHEM 212, PHYS P20 (F 2018). As you know, Appeal Regulation 3.3.5 notes that Incomplete grades are approved by instructors with outstanding work deadlines extended for a period of one full term after the completion of a class and is usually granted. Normally, this is an option when only a minimal amount of the course work is outstanding. If this timeline is not met, any further request to submit incomplete work or to write a final examination after that term has elapsed must be made through a formal appeal. At that time a careful review of the amount of course work outstanding will be reviewed and instructors will be consulted regarding that aspect as well as their ability to accept outstanding work after an extended period of time. The circumstances you outline in your letter were, I€™m sure difficult to manage, but the information we have received from your instructors indicate that you have not completed an appropriate amount of course work to warrant an extension of Incomplete grades.

I am certainly sympathetic to your situation and realize that this is a disappointing decision but based on the circumstances and documentation you have provided, I am willing to drop WRIT 125, FILM 240, ENIN 140, CHEM 222, MICR 221 (W 2018) and ENIN 301, CHEM 212, PHYS P20 (W 2019) late. If you wish to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter and we will amend your transcript accordingly.

Please note that appeals based on similar circumstances will not be granted in the future and it is important that you register with QSAS, who can help you manage both your health and your academics. Going forward, I strongly suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in a course by week 7 of the term. If you are finding the material too difficult or have not kept up with the course work, you should drop the course by the week 8 drop deadline. The drop deadline is set at Week 8 to allow students plenty of time to assess their progress in a class and withdraw without any academic penalty if they feel that they cannot keep up with the demands or have the academic background needed to successfully complete it.
