Dear Lauren Strathdee:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the challenges you have reported and have carefully considered your appeal to drop HLTH 237 (F 2019). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your documentation from your physician notes that you reported that you have been struggling with medical condition however that documentation does not provide information regarding the severity and impact that you condition has had on your studies. In addition, you have not explained why this course is impacted by your condition more so than your other courses. Based on these reasons, I cannot in good conscience alter your transcript. I am pleased to see that you are seeking medical support here in Kingston and hope that will help you with these ongoing challenges. I also suggest that you consider registering with QSAS if ongoing accommodations are required as they can assist you with both your health and academics.
Going forward, I strongly suggest that you pause at week 7 of the term and evaluate your progress in your courses. If you have fallen behind or are finding the work load difficult, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Lauren, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
