Dear Matthais Levita:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the reported challenges you faced due to your ongoing health issues and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop POLS 211 and POLS 359 (F 2019) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request. Please note POLS 257 is a full year course and you can drop that course on SOLUS up until February 28th.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal letter indicates that your health progressively worsened throughout the term but I am not prepared to alter your transcript to drop these courses after the fact since you were warned in the letter you received on July 29th that the appeals process is not meant to manage a chronic condition. You were, instead, to evaluate the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 and drop courses accordingly.
I am pleased to see that you remain connected with a counsellor and that you have registered with QSAS so they can help you manage both your health and your academics.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Matthias, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
