Dear Lilan Wu:
I received your letter of appeal requesting a late drop of CISC 124 (F 2019) and I am sorry to have read that your parent€™s illness caused you concern. After reviewing your appeal, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional which confirms how your circumstances impacted your studies and this course in particular.
I am sure this is a disappointing decision Lilan, and I sympathize with your situation, but excessive worry is not considered a circumstance that is extenuating in nature and I cannot, in good conscience, alter you transcript based on that circumstance. In addition, the information we received from your instructor demonstrates that you struggled in each of your quizzes, along with the final exam, and those quizzes took place throughout the term, beginning in early October and not just in late November after your father€™s illness was diagnosed.
Going forward, I encourage you to pause during week 7 of the term, and if you have been unable to keep up with the demands of a course, you should drop that course by the drop deadline which is set at Week 8.
I am pleased to see that you are repeating that course Lilan and let me remind you that the higher grade earned will be included in your GPA and the lower grade will be excluded from your GPA. The long term impact of your first attempt in CISC 124 will therefore be nil going forward.
