Dear Nakisha Naraine:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the challenges you outlined and I am sorry for your loss. I have carefully considered your request to drop CLST 103 and GNDS 125 (W 2019) and PHIL 257 and PSYC 100 (FW 2018/19) past the academic deadline and after reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal outlines that your grandmother passed away in September 2018 and your grades were impacted by the circumstances surrounding that difficult time. I certainly understand that you were grieving during that term and am pleased to see that you sought out counselling during that term. The courses you are appealing however are for the Winter term 2019 and it was your responsibility to evaluate the impact this was having, these many months later, and drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date that term if you were continuing to struggle.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Nakisha, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
