Dear Mr. Aylwin:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in ENSC 390 and Aegrotat standing in ENSC 203, POLS 280 and POLS 385 (F 2014). After reviewing your file I will grant your request in ENSC 203 and ENSC 390 but I must unfortunately deny your request in POLS 280 and POLS 385.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.2.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all of the work of the course.€ The Appeal Regulations go on to stress that Aegrotat standing will only be granted under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond her control.
While your appeal does certainly describe some circumstances that are extenuating in nature and there is supporting documentation to confirm them, you have not completed enough work in POLS 280 or POLS 385 to be eligible for Aegrotat standing. Professor Goodyear-Grant confirmed that you have completed 40 per cent of the required work for POLS 280 and 35 of the work required for POLS 385. A minimum of 60 per cent of each of these courses must be completed to be eligible for Aegrotat standing. However, given your circumstances I would be willing to allow you to drop POLS 280 and POLS 385 past the academic deadline instead. If you wish to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision letter to confirm your request. Once it has been received we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
