Dear Zoe Kane:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in MATH 121, PHYS 117 (FW 2017/2018) and BIOL 243 (F 2018). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your request for Credit Standing in MATH 121 and PHYS 117 based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances and the support that your documentation provides us with regarding the impact on your first year of study at Queen€™s. Your grade in these courses will appear as a CR on your transcript.
2. To deny your request to receive Credit Standing in BIOL 243 from the Fall term of 2018. I see that you were successful in other courses during this same term and acknowledge that you do not see your grade in BIOL 243 as an accurate representation of your passion for Biology that you outlined within your appeal request but I cannot support granting Credit Standing in this course.
Your appeal outlines that you had been dealing with a chronic condition that you have since sought treatment for and I commend you for that. However, the appeals process is not meant to manage an ongoing and/or chronic condition. Instead, a student should pause and evaluate their progress in courses during week 7 of term and if they have fallen behind or their health is impacting their progress, they should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline dates.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Zoe, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the lower grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.
