Dear Vaishnavie Simanantham:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the health related challenges you report that you experienced during the Summer term 2020 and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop CISC 101 (S 2020) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
Your appeal outlines that you had difficulty completing your assignments and keeping up with your lectures due to a health condition. You also indicate in your appeal letter that you had to assist you parents with medical emergencies. Unfortunately, the documentation you have submitted advises that you have been seeking support for your health condition since October 2019 but does not address the specific timeframe of the summer term nor the severity and impact your condition had on this course.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure Vaishnavie, but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.

I encourage you to follow through with your plan to work with your support team and suggest you carefully evaluate your progress in your courses prior to the drop date deadlines. If you have fallen behind in your courses due to extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the drop date deadline. Appeals for late drops are normally reserved for students who experience an extenuating circumstance after the drop date deadline.
