Dear Courtney Wynne:

I want to start by thanking you for writing your appeal letter. I admire your courage in putting those words down on paper and I want you to know that your story is an important one that deserves to be heard and I appreciate that you provided this to me. I am saddened to have read of the impact that the terrible acts of vandalism, racism and hate crimes in our Queen€™s community have had on your wellbeing, specifically on your mental health. I can understand how impactful this must have been on your studies during the Winter term, specifically in your courses that contained content directly related to your similar past and present experiences.

I have carefully considered your appeal to receive an extension of your incomplete grades in LLCU 270, LLCU 302 (Winter 2020) and to drop DEVS 221 (Winter 2020) after the deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request. You are permitted up to January 15, 2021 at the latest, to complete the course requirements for LLCU 270 and LLCU 302 and it is your responsibility to contact with Professor St.Amand to make the appropriate arrangements.

I see that you are currently enrolled in four courses during the Fall 2020 term. I want to remind you Courtney, that this could become a very heavy workload while you are also completing the outstanding work from LLCU 270 and LLCU 302. I would suggest that you monitor your progress in these courses over the next few weeks and if you find that it becomes overwhelming, that you consider reducing your course load. The academic deadline to drop a Fall term course is November 2, 2020.

I encourage you to continue working with your counsellor Lisa Doxtator as well as your health-care provider to help manage your health and wellbeing along with your academics. I also hope that you remain connected with the Four Directions Indigenous Student Centre and will reach out to Academic Advisor Dale Bennett at dale.bennett@queensu.ca with any of your academic-related concerns as your degree progresses.
