Dear Meera Feerasta:
I am sorry to have read of the health-related challenges outlined in your letter of appeal. I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat Standing in PHGY 215 (F 2019) based on those circumstances, and after reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course and have demonstrated that they met the learning outcomes in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
One document you submitted is relevant to the Winter term 2019 and a second document, which seems related to a chronic condition with an increased impairment, was for the Winter term 2020. You have not submitted documentation related to the Fall term 2019, which is when you were registered in PHGY 215. In addition, the information we received from your instructor advised that the majority of the second half of the class is only assessed by the final exam and there is no way to determine if the student can display understanding/competency for the material without the final exam. Therefore, it is not clear that the learning outcomes have been met beyond what your current grade indicates. The instructor is however willing to allow you to write the final exam at some point during this term. Please contact the instructor directly as soon as possible if you wish to take the exam this term.
Going forward, I suggest that you carefully evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term and if you are struggling in your courses or if your health is suffering, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.
