Dear Jasmine Modupe:

I am sorry to read in your letter of appeal the challenges you outlined related to your study permit and the loss of your friends. I have carefully considered your appeal to drop ARTF 275, PHIL 203, PHIL 275, PHIL 324 and PHIL 510 (W 2020) past the academic deadline and after reviewing your appeal, I have decided to grant your request.

I have exercised some leniency in this decision, acknowledging the difficult challenges you have outlined. Going forward however, I suggest that you carefully consider the approval dates of your study permits and if they are not in place by the drop date deadline or if it would be difficult to catch up in the courses after the study permit is approved, I would suggest that you drop your courses. Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter problems after week 8 or whose problems become more acute and is not meant to manage ongoing conditions.

In addition, I encourage you to consider using the supports the university has available including requesting Academic Consideration for extensions in course work if necessary, as well as the support services offered through Student Wellness Services to help you through difficult circumstances.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
