Dear Parker Manktelow:

I am sorry to have read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your request to receive Aegrotat Standing in DEVS 340 (F 2020). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.

Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling circumstances and documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.

I do acknowledge the challenges you experienced due to your father€™s health as well as your own and I realize that this may seem like a harsh decision, but it is difficult to grant Aegrotat standing in a course when in fact the student could have completed the requirements in the following term. You are carrying a full course load during this current Winter 2021 term and it would have been feasible for you to take less of a course load, thus giving you time to complete DEVS 340. In addition, you have taken on extra curricular activities which, had you not done, might have left you time to complete this course this term.

I am willing to approve an extension of an Incomplete grade in DEVS 340 giving you until the end of summer term 2021 to complete it. Please contact Professor Kumar to make arrangements regarding the submission due dates for the outstanding assignments in this course.

Going forward, I suggest that you carefully evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term and if you are struggling in your courses or if your health is suffering, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must do so within 21 days of receiving this letter.
