Dear Olivier Mugabo:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and understand that there was confusion related to the dropping of ARTH 301. I also noted the additional health related challenges you outlined. I have carefully considered your appeal to drop ARTH 301 (F 2020) past the academic deadline and receive Aegrotat standing in GPHY 362 and ARTH 260 (F 2020). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your appeal to drop ARTH 301 (F 2020).
2. To deny your request for Aegrotat standing in GPHY 362 since you have not completed the required 60 course work which therefore disqualifies you from receiving Aegrotat Standing.
3. To deny your request for Aegrotat standing in ARTH 260. The instructor in ARTH 260 provided significant input regarding this request noting that the course had been added late; a deferred exam was arranged for you and you did not write that specially prepared exam; there are questions regarding the submission or non-submission of an essay; and that the learning outcomes have not been met. I cannot therefore in good conscience alter your grade in this course.
Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€. Completing all the work in the course, if possible, is always the preference to ensure the student demonstrates that the learning outcomes have been met. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student€™s control preventing them from completing the course within the term, or within an extended period of time, and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied.
I am however willing to drop ARTH 260 late due to your documented extenuating circumstances (concussion). If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter.

If you have fallen behind in your studies due to your health or other extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
