Dear Chonyi Lama:
I was sorry to have read about your Father€™s illness and am glad to hear that he has since recovered. I have carefully considered your appeal to drop DEVS 230 (Fall 2020) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I understand that this is a disappointing decision however, the information that I received from your instructor indicates that you had only completed 20 of the work in this class going into the final exam and had not made any attempts to connect with them to request academic consideration or accommodations. Although I understand that your Father€™s illness may have impacted your ability to complete that final exam in December, with the absence of a rationale for the previous missing work as well as documentation to support it, I simply cannot grant your request at this time. If you have since completed the outstanding work in this class, I would suggest that you connect with your instructor to request an Incomplete Grade so that you can have the opportunity to write a deferred final exam within the upcoming Winter 2021 exam period.
Also, please know that repeating courses is a recommended strategy if you are concerned about a lower grade impacting your grade point average. When repeating the exact same course, both grades remain on your transcript but only the higher one is included within your cumulative GPA.
