Dear Michael Edwards:

I have carefully considered your appeal for an Extension of the Deadline to Submit Incomplete Work or to Complete a Deferred Examination in a Class in PHAR 100, PHGY 215, PHGY 216 (Summer 2020), CHEM 281, BCHM 270, GLPH 385 (Fall 2020), and Aegrotat Standing in PHAR 370 (Fall 2020). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:

1. To grant your request for an Extension of the Deadline to Submit Incomplete Work or to Complete a Deferred Examination in CHEM 281 (Fall 2020) as your instructor has generously offered to allow you to write the final exam during the Summer 2021 term. You are permitted up to August 31, 2021 at the latest to complete this outstanding component and it is your responsibility to contact Professor Carran to make the appropriate arrangements.

2. To deny your request for an Extension of the Deadline to Submit Incomplete Work or to Complete a Deferred Examination in PHAR 100, PHGY 215, and PHGY 216 (Summer 2020) as the information that I received from your instructors indicate that you were accommodated appropriated during the Summer 2020 term and were offered multiple chances to complete these outstanding components after the term had ended. I want you to know that I had also considered your request for Aegrotat Standing in these courses instead, however you have not met the learning outcomes based on the work that you did complete and so you are not eligible for this option. Going forward, I would suggest that you consider repeating PHAR 100, PHGY 215, and PGHY 216 in a future term when you are better able to complete them successfully.

3. To deny your request for an Extension of the Deadline to Submit Incomplete Work or to Complete a Deferred Examination in BCHM 270 (Fall 2020) as your instructor has indicated that there is too much work outstanding to support this request. I see that you have repeated this class during the Winter 2021 term and have been working with your instructor to arrange to complete the outstanding components of this course during the Summer 2021 term. Because of this, I am willing to allow you to drop BCHM 270 (Fall 2020) after the academic deadline so that your grade in this course will be replaced by a DR notation. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.

4. To deny your request to receive Aegrotat Standing in PHAR 370 (Fall 2020). Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)€ The information that I received from your instructor indicates that you have not completed 60 of the work in this course nor have you met the learning outcomes based on the work that you did complete. It is my understanding that this instructor has allowed you a deferred exam during the week of May 10 €“ 14, 2021 and as the documentation that you supplied within your appeal request dated February 22, 2021 indicates that you are able to handle the demands of a full-time course load, I would strongly suggest that you follow through with completing this exam as scheduled.

5. Your request for an Extension of the Deadline to Submit Incomplete Work or to Complete a Deferred Examination in GLPH 385 (Fall 2020) is still under review as I am waiting for additional information from your instructor. Please expect a follow-up decision letter regarding this request once this decision has been made.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, information about this appeal option and the 21 day deadline can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€). Do not use the on-line application for this process. Sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
