Associate Dean: Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Student Name: Lauren Hoffmann
Student Email: 19legh@queensu.ca

Course: GRMN 101
Term: Winter
Year: 2021
Category: Drop a course after the academic deadline

Dear Lauren Hoffmann:

I am sorry to read in your letter of appeal that you struggled in GRMN 101 (W 2021), and I have carefully considered your request to drop that course past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.

I have exercised significant leniency in this decision since an appeal to drop a course late would normally not be granted due to a student finding a course difficult. However, I realize that remote learning due to COVID19 may have impeded your ability to be successful in this course so decided to grant this appeal.

An important lesson for first year students Lauren, is to carefully review your progress in your courses during week 7 or 8 of the term and assess whether you are actively engaged in your courses and are completing your assignments on time and to the grade level you would like. If not, you should drop courses by the end of week 8 (the drop deadline). Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter problems after week 8 or whose problems become more acute after that date and include support documentation.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Yours sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
