Dear Michael Edwards:
I have carefully considered your appeal for an extension of an incomplete grade in GLPH 385 (Fall 2020). After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Appeal Regulation 3.3.5 notes that a student affected by extenuating circumstances may ask the course instructor for incomplete standing (IN), or that the final examination be delayed, for up to one full term after the completion of a class. If this request is granted, any further request to submit incomplete work or to write a final examination after that term has elapsed must be made through a formal appeal to the Associate Dean (Academic). A note from the instructor agreeing to a further extension and stating a revised final date for completion of the course work in question or the final examination must also be included.
I am certainly sympathetic to your situation and realize that this is a disappointing decision, however, the information that I received from your instructor indicates that they granted you an extension of the final paper until December 10, 2020 at 3pm to which you asked for a further extension of midnight on that date. The instructor reported that they agreed to this request yet didn€™t receive your final paper on that date nor any communication from you until the following month in January of 2021. Without the instructor€™s support in giving you a further extension for this final paper, I am not able to grant your appeal request at this time.
Also, without the outstanding component of the final paper to assess that you had met the learning outcomes in this course, I am unable to grant a request for Aegrotat Standing in this course at this time.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€). Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact the Office of the University Ombudsperson for information about student rights and responsibilities as well as guidance on policy and procedure (www.queensu.ca/ombuds).
Sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
