Dear Gregor MacKay:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you were attempting to manage during the Fall term and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop FILM 110 (FW 2020/21) and CISC 101 (F 2020) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in PHIL 151 and GPHY 101 (F 2020). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1. To grant your appeal to drop FILM 110 (FW 2020/21) and CISC 101 (F 2020).
2. To deny your request for Credit standing in PHIL 151 and GPHY 101 (F 2020). The instructor in GPHY 101 indicated that you did not complete midterm and two quizzes and therefore the grade accurately reflects the learning outcomes that were achieved. The instructor in PHIL 151 advised that you did not submit one paper that was due on October 18th and missed majority of the discussions, so the current grade accurately reflects the learning outcomes achieved in this course as well. As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.€
I would suggest that you reach out to these instructors to see if they would be willing to accept the outstanding requirements during the summer in these courses since both were amenable to that when I was in contact with them regarding your appeal.
Going forward, I strongly encourage you to continue to work with your QSAS Advisor and suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term. If you have fallen behind in your studies due to life challenges, your health, or other extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
