Dear Reilly Norman:
I was sorry to read of the challenges that you faced during the Winter 2021 term and I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in PHIL 260 (Winter 2021). After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower€. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling reasons indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
An extenuating circumstance is defined as a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student€™s control and debilitating to his or her academic performance. In general, an appeal would be successful when there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of an academic regulation. I recognize that this is a disappointing decision and I want you to know that I acknowledge the Covid-19 related impacts that you mentioned in your letter. However, I see that you did well in other classes during the Winter 2021 term and I want you to know that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage chronic struggles with math-based content. Going forward, I would suggest that you consider repeating this class in a future term if you are concerned about its impact within your GPA.
