Decision Letter
Appeal Number: 7906
Decision Date: July 6, 2021
Associate Dean: Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Student Name: Griffen Armstrong
Student Email: 19gapa@queensu.ca
Course: MUSC 171
Term: Summer
Year: 2021
Category: Drop a course after the academic deadline
Dear Griffin Armstrong:
I am sorry to have read of the circumstances you have reported in your letter of appeal, in part due to COVID related challenges, and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop MUSC 171 (S 2021) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.
I have exercised significant leniency in this decision since an appeal to drop a course late would normally require documentation and finding a course difficult is not normally grounds for a successful appeal. However, I have noted that you recognize that you underestimated the challenges of this course along with the competing demands of your summer job.
Griffin, let me make you aware of the Academic Consideration option for the future, which can assist you with short term consideration/extensions if needed: https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/search/node/Consideration.
Going forward, I suggest that you carefully review your progress in your courses prior to the drop dates deadlines and assess whether you are actively engaged in your courses and are completing your assignments on time and to the grade level you would like. If not, you should drop courses by the drop deadline. Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter problems after that deadline date or whose problems become more acute.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
Yours sincerely,
Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
