Dear Douglas Heaton:
I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal that you have had a difficult year and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop FILM 343, HIST 243, HIST 400, HIST 443 (F 2020) and FILM 336, HIST 246, HIST 254, HIST 444 (W 2021) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.
Douglas, I have granted this appeal based on your current documentation and ongoing mental health struggles for which you have previously, and are again, seeking treatment. I know that health conditions such as yours can be very difficult to manage and commend you for your strength and perseverance.
Please note, however, that appeals are not meant to manage chronic conditions and, as recommended by the Academic Consideration Advisor, Jessica Shepherd, I strongly encourage you to register with QSAS to obtain help managing your academics.
Going forward, if you have not reached out to QSAS or otherwise acted to manage your academics by dropping courses when your health declines, we may not be able to grant further appeals after the fact.
I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses during week 7 of each term. If you have fallen behind or are not performing to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop date deadline. Dropping courses late is normally reserved for students who experienced new or acute extenuating circumstances after the drop date deadline.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
Best of luck in your degree progression.
Sincerely,
Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
