Dear Triumph Olasoko:

I am sorry to have read about the challenges you faced during the past academic year and have carefully considered your appeal for credit standing in BIOL 102 (Fall 2020) and to drop BIOL 103 (Winter 2021) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.

As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.

I am certainly sympathetic to your situation however I want to point out that remote learning challenges as well as Covid-19 related worry are circumstances in which all students are coping with. As you know, the Faculty of Arts and Science offers several remedies for students who are impacted by these types of issues as I see that you utilized Academic Consideration on a few occasions during the 2020/2021 academic year and I want to commend you for that.

Looking at your transcript, I see that you successfully completed other classes to high standards during both terms that you are appealing from. It also appears from the grade breakdown provided by your instructor of BIOL 102 that your grades in this class were quite stable through the entire Fall term. I realize that this is a disappointing decision however with the absence of documentation to support the timeline and severity of your extenuating circumstances, as well as to confirm the academic impacts of such circumstances, I simply cannot grant your request at this time.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean??s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on ??Board of Studies?). You may contact the Office of the University Ombudsperson for information about student rights and responsibilities as well as guidance on policy and procedure (www.queensu.ca/ombuds).

Sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
