Dear Linshan Xu:
I have carefully considered your appeal to extend your Incomplete grade in ECON 244 (W 2021). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Appeal Regulation 3.3.5 notes that Incomplete grades can be granted by instructors and outstanding work deadlines extended for a period of one full term after the completion of a class. Normally, this is an option when only a minimal amount of the course work is outstanding. If this timeline is not met, any further request to submit incomplete work or to write a final examination after that term has elapsed must be made through a formal appeal. At that time a careful review of the amount of course work outstanding will be reviewed in consultation with your instructor as will the circumstances that prevented you from completing the course as well as relevant documentation.
I am certainly sympathetic to your situation and realize that this is a disappointing decision but you have been unable to provide documentation that addresses the circumstances experienced during the summer term which is the time period for which you had an Incomplete grade. Additionally, your instructor advised that there is a significant amount of work yet to be completed in this course, and the material is no longer fresh in your mind. The instructor and I agree that you would benefit from re-taking this course rather than extend the Incomplete grade for an additional term.
Going forward, I would strongly suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to the week 8 drop date deadline and, if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the course(s) to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by this deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration service.
