Dear Yue Yin:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your request to waive the 21 day appeal deadline. Based on the circumstances outlined, including challenges related to COVID 19, I will grant your appeal to waive the 21 day appeal deadline as well as grant your request to ??Waive the Requirement to Withdraw for One year?. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.
This decision was not made lightly Yue Yin and I am reminding you that as you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider (several of which you have already committed to carrying out):
?? Choose courses carefully. Considering repeating courses since achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA. This course of action will mitigate the risk of being required to withdraw for three years when we next assess your transcript in May 2022.
?? Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right courses or plan for your interests and aptitudes?
?? Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
?? Reach out the Student Wellness Services Centre located on the first floor of Mitchell Hall, 69 Union Street if your mental health impacts your studies on an ongoing basis. Student Wellness Services offers personal counselling free of charge to all Queen's students to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
Going forward I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses during week 7 of each term and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop date deadline. Please do not wait until you receive your grades and then request a drop for those that are failures.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by Week 8 is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class. Here is the link for information about that process:

Please read carefully the document which will follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.
I wish you success in your future studies.
Yours sincerely,
Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
