Dear Sean Clark:

I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your request to waive the 21 day appeal deadline. Based on the circumstances outlined and the documentation provided, I will grant your appeal to waive the 21-day appeal deadline as well as drop DEVS 230 (F 2020) and HIST 209, POLS 212, RELS 227(W 2021) and POLS 250 (FW 2020/21) which will remove the ??Waive the Requirement to Withdraw for One Year? ruling. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.

This decision was not made lightly Sean, but I was pleased to see that you have reached out to family and friends for support and have established and maintained regular communications with a health care team and are working with them on a treatment plan.

As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider (several of which you have already committed to carrying out):

?? Choose courses carefully. Achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA. This course of action will mitigate the risk of being required to withdraw for three years when we next assess your transcript in May 2022.
?? Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right courses or Plan for your interests and aptitudes?
?? Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
?? Consider reaching out for support from our Student Wellness Services Centre where counselling and support is available to Queen??s student and if ongoing support and accommodations are required, register with QSAS who can help support by your health and academics.
?? Consider registering in a lighter course load so you can focus on both your health and your academics.

Please read carefully the document which will follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

Going forward, you should be attentive to your progress and assess whether you are actively engaged and attending classes, completing your readings and assignments. If not, you should drop any courses in which you have fallen behind in by the end of week 8 each term (the drop deadline). Appeals for late drops are generally reserved for those who encounter extenuating circumstances after week 8. Students who are managing ongoing challenges are expected to evaluate the impact those challenges are having on their studies and use the drop deadline, not an appeal after the fact, as the remedy.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class. Here is the link for information about that process:

I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
